Investing Wealth After Selling a Business

How to structure business sale proceeds: plan liquidity, spread risk and define your wealth goals before making individual investment decisions.

For many entrepreneurs, the sale of their business is the largest liquidity event of their lives. Concentrated entrepreneurial risk suddenly becomes liquid wealth that needs to be reorganised. The central question is not which product to buy, but what function each building block of wealth should perform in future.

From sale proceeds to a wealth structure

A proven approach is to divide wealth into short-term liquidity, long-term capital preservation, growth components and, where appropriate, new entrepreneurial holdings. Only once this architecture is in place do concrete investment decisions follow — disciplined, step by step, and with a clear view of risk, costs and liquidity.

Timing matters too: instalments, earn-outs and potential tax payments may be spread over several years. Planning should reconcile these cash flows with private spending and new investment plans. This reduces the risk of needing capital that has already been committed for the long term.
