Structured Products: Opportunities and Risks
Understand structured products before investing: explore payout profiles, costs, issuer risk and potential losses alongside their uses in a portfolio.
Structured products combine traditional investments with derivative components and can create payoff profiles that direct investments cannot achieve: partial protection, defined coupons or targeted market access. It is precisely this flexibility that makes them demanding to explain.
Understand the payoff and counterparty risk
Anyone using structured products should understand issuer risk, liquidity, cost structure and behaviour in stress scenarios. They are not a substitute for a strategy, but a building block within a structure — appropriate only once risk profile, investment horizon and suitability have been assessed.
An advertised coupon says little about the overall outcome. The terms under different market conditions, the issuer's creditworthiness and costs all matter. Any capital protection may be conditional and often applies only at maturity.
